FAQs Puggles
- What is the benefit in having a designed cross breed? Purebred dogs are wonderful because they have traits, both physical and personality, that you can predict. One issue with purebred dogs is that they can have genetic defects and a predisposition to certain health issues. This can be heart breaking, frustrating and expensive to deal with. We have bred pugs for years and love the breed unconditionally. The advantage of cross breeding two purebred dogs is that you still get a uniform puppy with traits you can predict, but you get the health benefits of a cross bred. Hybrid Vigor comes when breeds are out-crossed and it results in animals that are healthier and more vigorous.
- How big do your puppies get? Our puppies range from 13 to 20 pounds. Typically males will be larger and females will be smaller, but that can vary greatly from puppy to puppy. Compare to a full sized puggle, they will be approximately half the size.
- What kind of Vaccination/Worming program do you have? We vaccinate our puppies the first time at 7 weeks old, and then every 3 weeks after that with the Fort Dodge Duramune 5. Beginning at 4 weeks we worm the puppies every 2 to 3 weeks with Nemex 2 for round worms. Your puppy will be current on vaccinations and worming at all times.
- How much exercise does a puggle need? Puggles are considered a medium energy dog. Because of their size, they do well in small yards and in apartments. They will need regular exercise, but walks, running around in the yard and playing with them will be enough.
- Do puggles make good family dogs? Puggles make GREAT family dogs. For a small dog, they are very tough. They love children and are good with little children because they do not have a tendency to nip or be aggressive. They like to play, but they also love to snuggle.
- What kind of grooming is involved in with a puggle? Do they shed much? Another nice perk of owning a puggle is that they require no special grooming. Regular nail trimming is all the maintenance they will need. Puggles shed less than a pug, but more than a long haired small breed. They are not considered hypo allergenic. Brushing them regularly, and washing them in luke warm, or cold water will help keep the shedding to a minimum.
- Potty training… are puggles hard to potty train? Most small dogs have a tendency to be a little difficult to potty train. In my experience, puggles are easier to potty train than most small breeds, and a little more tricky to potty train than most large breeds. What potty training breaks down to though is the method you use and the consistency with which you use it. I encourage people to crate train their puppies, this really cuts down on the amount of time the puppy is out of your site, and it is very convenient for traveling or when you need to leave them at home.
- Do you offer a health guarantee? We guarantee the puppies health for 48 hours after they leave our home, so we encourage people to set up an appointment with a vet for a checkup. If it is a weekend, or an appointment can’t be made, we extend that til the vet appointment. We do offer a guarantee against fatal genetic defects in the first 3 years. To date, we have had no occurrence with either situation in any of our puggles.
- What is your position on rehoming? We are always happy to take a puppy back rather than have it go to the pound or be passed around. We have a section on our forum that is for puggles that are needing to be rehomed.
